Text file input with variable rows and fixed length fields

Hi,
I am looking for a way to read different rows of fixed length data from a text file. I have also looked at possibly splitting the file by row type to create multiple input files that could be read easily by the current text file input widget, but I cannot figure out how to achieve this.
