Step 3 suggests to "Use XML comments (<!-- -->) to disable all of the Threshold parameters in all of the appender elements."
As a matter of fact, commenting out that element produces the startup log file to print the following error message:
file:/pentaho/biserver-ce/tomcat/webapps/pentaho/WEB-INF/classes/log4j.xml; lineNumber: 55; columnNumber: 14; The string "--" is not permitted within comments.
Then also kindly suggests me to get it together:
log4j:WARN No appenders could be found for logger
log4j:WARN Please initialize the log4j system properly.
log4j:WARN See http://logging.apache.org/log4j/1.2/faq.html#noconfig for more info.

By the way, line 55 is NOT the line I am to comment out, but if I undo the change, the error message, too, disappears.
Instead of commenting out the threshold, I change the value from ERROR to DEBUG, and that launches the debug mode properly.
