I guess virtually everyone wants to be a "good" person. Do something that helps making the world a better place. Lots of kids want to be doctors, vets, do research to cure diseases, help someone basically.
But on a daily bases, very few of us have the chance to actually do something that makes a difference on things that really matter. Let's face it, it's IT. It's cool, and all, but we're not changing people's lives. Indirectly, maybe, but not directly.
A few months ago we got an email for someone interested in buying the Ctools tutorials we sell. There was a technical question related with the website that was preventing him to buy the tutorials, but also came with another question:
P.S. If you had a charity discount code, you could you could tell me it too :)
At the time we didn't pay much attention to this; We use an external site to take care of the sales and we keep it as simple as possible, so the automatic answer was "hum, no, we don't have such thing".A few days later....
- Hey, did you guys notice the email address of that guy that was asking for the charity discount?
- Hum... no, what about it?
- It was some organization called "beatingbloodcancer" or something
Silence. Did we just charge a couple hundred dollars to an organization that fights cancer? I admit I felt dirty at the time. It was an unanimous decision that we would have to make up for it, even if it would require working overtime to do it.- Hum... no, what about it?
- It was some organization called "beatingbloodcancer" or something
We replied to the original email saying we would do a pro-bono implementation. And we did.
We are talking about Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, a beating blood cancer UK charity dedicated to improving the lives of patients with all types of blood cancer, including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. They are now using our dashboards to track the charity events they organize (sample version here)
And that "shame" feeling was replaced by an immense pride, very adequate for this festive season! :)
Merry Christmas everyone!
