AAAR - Alfresco Audit Analysis and Reporting

Alfresco is one of the most widely used open source content management systems. It does what it does and does it very well. And though it's not part of it's core, everyone understand how crutial it is to get metrics out of the alfresco system.

To that goal, Francesco Corti built a full fledged audit layer on top of Alfresco using Pentaho. The principle is simple - for doing optimized analytics it's (still) a good rule of thumb to build a datamart properly optimized for the informations we're extracting for the system and doing all the discovery on top of that. To do that, one needs an ETL tool and then once that's done, tools to do reporting and exploration on top of that data warehouse. And this is, by definition, what Pentaho does.

The result of that work is what Francesco called AAAR - Alfresco Audit Analysis and Reporting, and he recently released version 2.

Francesco presented his work to the Pentaho community in the PCM13 meeting, and what personally surprised me was the overall quality of the solution. For someone that was an alfresco specialist, the work he did on Pentaho across the board. You can see in the AAAR pageseveral videos of the solution, that have pieces of reports, dashboards and olap cubes for slice and dice.

Since the version he demoed, Francesco took it one (giant) step forward. Realizing that one big obstacle to the adoption of this kind of (dual) systems is the installation procedure, he built this as simple as possible - an addition to the Pentaho Marketplace to take care of the install procedure.

Once installed, the AAAR will display an installation wizard that will guide the user through the installation process and register the relevant content on Pentaho solution repository

Be sure to check it. A great example for an end-to-end integration with a third-party application with a lot of components involved - ETL with PDI (Francesco also maintains a CMIS input plugin in Kettle), analysis, reports, CTools dashboards and a Sparkl application for the installation and configuration wizard.

And really well executed. Kudos to Francesco
